# Alligator Cracking: Why It Means Your Asphalt Is Failing From Below

Alligator cracking asphalt is a sign of serious pavement problems. It points to failures happening beneath the surface, not just on top. This type of damage requires a proper diagnosis to fix it right.

Alligator cracking asphalt is a clear sign your pavement is failing from below. This distinctive pattern, resembling alligator scales, means there are serious structural problems with your asphalt, usually originating in the sub-base.

When you see these interconnected cracks, it is not just a surface issue. It means the foundation supporting your asphalt has weakened, and the pavement cannot handle the weight and traffic it was designed for.

## What is Alligator Cracking Asphalt?

Alligator cracking, also known as fatigue cracking, appears as a series of interconnected, block-like cracks. They spread across the asphalt surface in a pattern similar to an alligator's hide. This type of cracking does not happen overnight. It develops over time due to repeated stress.

In North Alabama, factors like heavy summer heat, freeze-thaw cycles in winter, and the properties of our local subgrades, like red clay, can accelerate this process. When the ground underneath your asphalt shifts, settles, or loses its strength, the asphalt above it loses support. It then flexes and bends more than it should, eventually leading to this characteristic cracking.

## Why Does It Happen? The Sub-Base is the Key

The root cause of alligator cracking asphalt is almost always a failure of the sub-base or base layer beneath the asphalt. These layers provide the structural support for the entire pavement. If they are weak, poorly compacted, or saturated with water, they cannot do their job.

Here are the main reasons for sub-base failure:

### Poor Drainage

Water is the enemy of asphalt pavement. If water gets into the sub-base and cannot drain away, it softens the soil and reduces its load-bearing capacity. This is especially true in areas with clay soils, which can hold a lot of water and expand or contract significantly.

### Inadequate Base Thickness

Sometimes, the base layer was not built thick enough for the expected traffic loads. This means the base is simply not strong enough to support the asphalt and vehicles on it, leading to premature failure.

### Material Degradation

Over time, the materials in the base layer can degrade. This might be due to constant movement, chemical reactions, or repeated saturation and drying. As the base weakens, the asphalt above it starts to crack.

### Overloading

Putting too much weight on pavement not designed for it will cause sub-base failure. A parking lot built for cars will not hold up to heavy truck traffic without showing signs of distress like alligator cracking.

## The Problem with Patching

When you see alligator cracking, your first thought might be to patch it. However, a simple surface patch is only a temporary fix. It addresses the symptom, not the underlying cause. Because the problem is below the surface, patching over alligator cracks will only last a short time. The cracks will reappear, often worse than before, as the compromised sub-base continues to move and break down the new asphalt.

For smaller, isolated areas of alligator cracking, sometimes a full-depth patch can be effective. This involves cutting out the cracked area, digging down to the sub-base, repairing or replacing the faulty sub-base material, and then laying new asphalt. This is much more involved than a simple surface patch.

## The Real Fix: Full-Depth Replacement

To properly fix alligator cracking asphalt, you usually need a full-depth replacement of the affected area. This means removing all layers of the existing pavement, from the asphalt surface down to the damaged sub-base. Then, new, properly compacted sub-base material is installed, followed by new base layers and a fresh asphalt surface.

This approach ensures the entire pavement structure is sound again. It stops the cycle of repeated cracking and repair. For extensive areas of alligator cracking, especially in commercial parking lots, a complete [asphalt paving services](/services/asphalt-paving) project might be necessary.

Project One Contracting has over 20 years of paving experience across North Alabama. Our crews understand the unique challenges of local soil conditions and climate. We know how to diagnose the real cause of alligator cracking and recommend the right solution, whether it is targeted [asphalt repair](/services/asphalt-repair) or a larger [commercial parking lot paving](/commercial/parking-lot-paving) project.

Do not let alligator cracking asphalt get worse. Ignoring it leads to more extensive and costly repairs down the line. Get a clear assessment of your pavement's condition.
